A baby yawning

If you’re planning to have a baby, or just looking into the idea, there’s no time like the present to get your finances in order.

Having a baby is a huge financial responsibility. For middle income families in the United States, it costs roughly $230,000 to raise a child before college tuition.

Of course, you’re not going to pay that all upfront. But having an idea of how much both prepartum and postpartum expenses cost will help you plan and organize your life accordingly.

That’s why we made a budget spreadsheet to help you out. This comes in Excel format (.xlsx).

This baby budget spreadsheet includes:

Prepartum Expenses

  • Medical – Co-pays, ultrasound, birthing classes, prenatal vitamins, etc.
  • Nursery – Bassinet, baby monitor, changing table, mobile, baby blanket, etc.
  • Clothing/gear – Maternity pants, comfortable shoes, pregnancy body pillow, etc.
  • Classes – breast-feeding, hypnobirthing, pain management, parenting, etc.
  • Miscellaneous – Parenting books, prenatal massage, babymoon, etc.

Postpartum Expenses

  • Eating – Bibs, burp cloths, bottle warmer, sterilizing equipment, etc.
  • Breast-feeding – Breast pump, nipple shields, nursing pillow, ice packs, etc.
  • Baby clothing – Onesies, booties, hats, sleepwear, etc.
  • Travel – Car seat, stroller, baby carrier/sling, stroller sack, etc.
  • Childcare – Nanny, babysitter, daycare, etc.
  • Birthing/medical – Hospital labor and delivery, doula/midwife, lactation consultant, etc.
  • Postpartum recovery – Maxi pads, lanolin, pain relievers, etc.
  • Diapers – Disposable or cloth, changing pad, diaper bag, etc.
  • Bathing/grooming – Newborn tub, baby shampoo, baby nail clippers, etc.
  • Activity equipment – Bouncy seat, play mat, swing, etc.

Once you have your finances in order for the big day, it will be one less thing to worry about.
